A person who is planning to begin the career of cosmetology will want to make certain she or he chooses a school that is accredited. There are specific standards of the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. These are national standards and apply to the beauty school Sacramento institution of education.

Those standards for the accrediting are the curriculum, the quality of the educational experience and whatever admissions policy applies to the student. The approval is granted on an autonomous and independent basis. The commission is an agency that accredits post-secondary educational institutions.

Numerous courses of study are available in this field. You may find one that is a perfect fit for you. Women and men attend beauty college together and work in beauty salons side by side.

The length of time required to receive certification in any of the programs depend on which program you select. Secondly, it depends on the required number of hours in the state where you will practice. Of course, those who enroll full time will complete the studies faster than those who attend part time. Both full and part time students will reach the same level of abilities before being graduated.

Regarding the full curriculum of the all comprehensive cosmetology program, it is the most extensive. On average it requires 1500 to 2100 classroom hours, depending on the state. Less extensive programs do not take as many hours.

One example, certification in nail technology requires 300 to 600 hours. The same number of hours is needed for a make up artist. It takes 300 to 1500 hours of education for the certification in esthetics, skin care or electrology.

Each individual state has its own licensing board. That board sets the number of training hours that a student must complete. It varies widely from one state to another. California set the number at 1600 hours. It includes 3200 hours as an apprentice and 220 in training.

After completion the student is eligible to take a licensing exam. There is an ongoing requirement. A licensed beautician must renew the license every two years in California.
