The 3D and 4D sonograms are not standard care as the 2D version is. Doctors offer these prenatal tests as a way to give parents-to-be an exciting vision of their developing baby. It may be exciting to them. Standard insurance policies do not always provide coverage for the Sugar Land 3D/4D diagnostic ultrasound, however.

Not all medical facilities are going to offer this 4D ultrasound. The description indicates it is different and more advanced than previously available technologies. The 4D image of the developing fetus is like an actual movie. The mother and father might be able to see a smile on the face of their baby.

An obstetrician may view the 4D ultrasound as having a practical purpose in some cases. It will show some birth defects that the others will not be able to. This may have a medically-valid purpose such as if a heart defect is suspected in the fetus.

Research studies have been done that indicate no danger is present in these sonograms. No one can say for sure what will be discovered in the future though. Some respected medical groups say they should not be done frequently as it may not be good for the baby. Some parents are having them done at mall locations. It is advisable to check the credentials of any technician doing them in a mall.

The expectant mother lies on an examining table during the testing. A technician begins by applying gel to her stomach. This gel helps to transmit the sound waves. A probe is then held against her stomach and moved back and forth over the skin to facilitate capture of the image. That image of the developing baby is viewed on a monitor.

This is an excellent technology. Some families may have a genetic history of heart disease and the obstetrician wants to check for it in the baby. If a 4D sonogram indicates a defect, a neonatologist could be asked for an opinion. Corrective surgery has been performed in-vitro by a pediatric cardiologist with successful results.
